More about the Monadnock Region and the Weather

Mt Monadnock, elevation 3165', stands like a sentinel over the region

Mount Monadnock is reputed to be the most climbed mountain in the east. With its distinctive profile and a rocky bare peak, the views of the mountain and from the mountain are justly renowned.

The picturesque Monadnock area of southwest New Hampshire is defined by its historic villages, quiet country roads, gentle mountains and sparkling lakes, and a lively arts, crafts and performing arts scene. Quintessential New England architecture, antique shops and country stores in every town, and plenty of driving scenery attract visitors from everywhere.

Our Weather -- cooler than Boston, but variable like all New England weather

The hills and mountains of southwestern N.H. are not high (500 ft to 3000 ft)(150 km to 1000 km) but are well inland from the seacoast and Boston. This means cooler temperatures and a snowier winter. The benefit for you is pleasant weekends most of the summer, crisp fall days, and skiing during the winter. The typical range of temperatures:

  • Spring: 20F to 60F,
  • Summer: 50F to 85F
  • Fall: 30F to 70F
  • Winter: -10F to 40F.

As with all of New England it's always a good idea to bring a sweater and umbrella in summer, warm coat and snowboots in winter. But don't forget to be prepared for brilliant sun!

Yes, you can get here in the winter! The state of N.H. makes keeping roads passable a priority. In general, even with a fresh-falling snowstorm, you will find the roads of New Hampshire to be safe to drive. And Stepping Stones now has a generator back-up system for emergencies (after the unusual but persistent icestorms of 1998). You can rest assured that your cozy weekend away in the winter will be as cozy as you planned. You may even "have" to be "stuck" in New Hampshire for an extra day or two!
